GoodVat vs Avalara for Cross-Border Sellers 2026

Avalara and GoodVat both cover the full compliance cycle: registration, calculation, invoicing or documents, and filing, across the US and internationally. That makes this a fairer comparison than Avalara against a calculation-only tool.

What separates them is who they’re built for. Avalara is an enterprise platform with 700+ connectors, modules for exemption certificates and customs, and contracts that usually start in the thousands of dollars a year. GoodVat covers the same core cycle for online businesses and platforms, with flat monthly pricing and a much shorter setup.

GoodVat: Files local returns, including UK VAT through MTD. It uses the transaction data already in the platform and submits every period.

Avalara: Full local filing through Avalara VAT Reporting and Avalara Returns. It also offers a free MTD Filer Excel add-in, a low-cost entry point for simple UK VAT filing.

Verdict: Tie on capability. Avalara’s free MTD Filer is a nice extra for very simple UK filers.

GoodVat: Applies IOSS rates across every channel and prepares and files the monthly IOSS return. GoodVat is not a registered intermediary. EU-established sellers don’t need one. Non-EU sellers must appoint one, and GoodVat prepares the return for that intermediary to submit.

Avalara: Calculates IOSS correctly through AvaTax and has deep experience with complex EU setups: IOSS alongside OSS, local registrations and EU warehouse stock. It isn’t an intermediary either.

Verdict: Equivalent on calculation, and neither is an intermediary. Avalara has more documented deployments in complex multi-scheme EU setups.

GoodVat: Union and Non-Union OSS, with registration, calculation and quarterly filing included.

Avalara: Full OSS support with managed filing through Avalara’s VAT Reporting service.

Verdict: Tie.

GoodVat: Nexus tracking in every state, calculation at rooftop level and state filing. Jurisdictions are resolved with GoodVat’s own address and geocoding data instead of ZIP-code approximations, and sales where a marketplace facilitator has already collected the tax are handled automatically.

Avalara: Exceptional and widely used. AvaTax covers every state, nexus tracking, granular product taxability and state filing, with free filing in SST states. Exemption certificate management (ECM) is a mature, separate product.

Verdict: Avalara wins on depth and track record, especially for B2B sellers who manage exemption certificates. GoodVat’s rooftop accuracy is a strong point for direct-to-consumer sellers.

GoodVat: Real-time calculation through the API or native integrations, by product, location and B2B or B2C status, with VAT number checks and reverse charge.

Avalara: Real-time calculation in 190+ countries through AvaTax, with granular product taxability and reverse charge.

Verdict: Functionally equivalent for most online sellers. Avalara has more depth for unusual product taxability.

GoodVat:

  • E-commerce and marketplaces: Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Amazon FBA, Etsy
  • Payments: Stripe, Square, Adyen, PayPal, Braintree, Amazon Pay, GoCardless, Mollie, Checkout.com, Razorpay
  • Accounting and ERP: Xero, QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage, Zoho Books
  • API: REST API for custom stores and platforms

Avalara:

  • 700+ prebuilt connectors, the largest library in the industry
  • ERP: SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics
  • E-commerce: Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento
  • Marketplaces: Amazon, eBay, Etsy
  • CRM: Salesforce CPQ

Verdict: Avalara wins clearly on breadth, especially for ERPs. GoodVat covers the platforms most online businesses actually use and connects directly to more payment processors.

GoodVat: Flat monthly plans starting at $20/month. Registration and filing are quoted per jurisdiction.

Avalara: Quote-based annual contracts. Mid-market AvaTax deployments usually run $4,000–$20,000/year, and full enterprise modules (calculation, returns, ECM, managed filing) can reach $50,000–$75,000+/year. Implementation costs are extra.

Verdict: GoodVat is far cheaper for small and mid-sized businesses. Avalara’s price makes sense when you actually need its ERP depth and extra modules.

GoodVat: A sales-led onboarding call, after which GoodVat configures the account with you. For most online businesses that means days, not months.

Avalara: High. E-commerce connectors can be set up without a partner in simple cases, but ERP deployments usually need an implementation partner, product taxability mapping and testing.

Verdict: GoodVat is much simpler to get running. Neither is instant.

GoodVat: A per-calculation audit log with the exact rule, rate and jurisdiction, plus filed returns stored alongside the data behind them.

Avalara: Audit-ready reporting, exemption certificate trails and a managed service that answers tax authority queries on your behalf.

Verdict: Both are audit-ready. Avalara’s managed service handling notices from tax authorities is a real advantage at scale.

GoodVat: Registration, calculation, invoicing and filing in 190 countries and 14,000+ jurisdictions, plus address standardisation and geocoding APIs. E-invoicing is on the roadmap but not live.

Avalara: AvaTax, Returns, ECM, CertCapture, Avalara for Customs (HS classification) and e-invoicing for EU ViDA mandates.

Verdict: Avalara wins on breadth: customs, exemption certificates and live e-invoicing are all things GoodVat doesn’t offer today.

GoodVat: Onboarding call, then human tax experts over email, chat and Slack. It’s a new product with few public reviews so far.

Avalara: Tiered enterprise support, with dedicated account management at premium tiers. Trustpilot reviews sit around 3.1–3.4/5 across 460+ reviews, with recurring complaints about billing disputes and response times. The managed filing teams get better reviews than software support.

Verdict: GoodVat offers more direct access to people who know tax. Avalara has scale and a long track record, with mixed reviews.

Beyond Sellers: White-Label Tax for Platforms

Section titled “Beyond Sellers: White-Label Tax for Platforms”

GoodVat sells its compliance engine as a white-label API for platforms:

  • Online marketplaces: meet marketplace facilitator and deemed-supplier obligations, and offer tax compliance to every seller as a feature.
  • Payment processors: PSPs such as Adyen, along with acquirers and PayFacs, can launch their own branded tax product with calculation, invoicing and filing to compete with Stripe Tax.
  • Merchant of Record platforms: MoRs expanding into new countries get calculation, registration and filing infrastructure for every new market.

Avalara has a large partner ecosystem and is built into many platforms, but it’s sold as Avalara, under Avalara’s brand and contract terms. GoodVat is designed to be invisible to the platform’s users, with the platform setting its own brand, pricing and onboarding.

Choose GoodVat if:

  • You’re an online business that wants full compliance without an enterprise contract
  • You want flat monthly pricing instead of a five-figure annual commitment
  • You want to be set up in days, without an implementation partner
  • You’re a marketplace, PSP or MoR that wants tax under your own brand

Choose Avalara if:

  • You run SAP, Oracle or Dynamics and need a native ERP connector
  • You sell B2B in the US and need mature exemption certificate management
  • You need customs and HS code classification alongside indirect tax
  • You need mandatory e-invoicing today
  • You want a managed service that answers tax authority notices for you

Neither if:

  • You’re outside the EU and need an IOSS intermediary. Use EAS Project, SimplyVAT or Taxually
