GoodVat vs Vertex for Cross-Border Sellers 2026

Vertex is enterprise tax infrastructure. It’s usually embedded in SAP or Oracle, deployed by certified partners over months and priced at $30,000 a year and up. GoodVat is a compliance service for online businesses and the platforms that serve them, priced monthly and set up in days.

Both calculate and file tax globally, but they’re built for very different buyers. If you’re asking which one fits, your ERP usually answers the question.

GoodVat: Files local returns, including UK VAT through MTD, from the transaction data already in the platform.

Vertex: Full UK MTD filing through Vertex Cloud VAT Returns, including VAT group returns and multi-entity structures.

Verdict: Both file. Vertex handles group and multi-entity structures that most online businesses don’t have.

GoodVat: Applies IOSS rates across every channel and prepares and files the monthly return. GoodVat is not a registered intermediary. EU-established sellers don’t need one. Non-EU sellers must appoint one, and GoodVat prepares the return for that intermediary to submit.

Vertex: Calculates IOSS natively across connected systems. It isn’t an intermediary and doesn’t file the IOSS return.

Verdict: GoodVat takes you further toward a filed return. Neither is an intermediary.

GoodVat: Union and Non-Union OSS, with registration, calculation and quarterly filing included.

Vertex: Full OSS calculation, with managed filing through Vertex’s partner network.

Verdict: Equivalent outcome. GoodVat handles OSS in-house, while Vertex relies on its partners.

GoodVat: Nexus tracking in every state, rooftop-level calculation using GoodVat’s own geocoding data, marketplace-facilitator awareness and state filing.

Vertex: US sales and use tax is what Vertex was founded on in 1978. It has millions of product-jurisdiction taxability rules, exemption certificates, purchase-side use tax, and manufacturing and drop-shipping rules. Vertex is an SST Certified Service Provider.

Verdict: Vertex wins on depth, by a long way for manufacturers and distributors with use-tax exposure. For a direct-to-consumer online seller, GoodVat’s accuracy and filing cover what’s needed.

GoodVat: A real-time API and native store integrations, by product, location and B2B or B2C status, with VAT number checks and reverse charge.

Vertex: An enterprise-grade real-time engine, highly configurable for complex product catalogues and ERP-embedded transactions.

Verdict: Vertex wins for ERP-driven and complex catalogues. GoodVat is simpler to plug into a storefront or payment flow.

GoodVat:

  • E-commerce and marketplaces: Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Amazon FBA, Etsy
  • Payments: Stripe, Square, Adyen, PayPal, Braintree, Amazon Pay, GoCardless, Mollie, Checkout.com, Razorpay
  • Accounting: Xero, QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage, Zoho Books

Vertex:

  • SAP: Gold Partner, with the deepest SAP integration in the industry
  • Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Salesforce, NetSuite
  • Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento: connectors available, but not as deep

Verdict: Different worlds. Vertex is built around the ERP, GoodVat around the store and the payment processor.

GoodVat: Flat monthly plans starting at $20/month. Registration and filing are quoted per jurisdiction.

Vertex: Quote-based, typically $30,000–$50,000/year for smaller enterprise accounts and $100,000–$500,000+ for large ones, with implementation partner fees on top.

Verdict: GoodVat, by orders of magnitude, for anyone who doesn’t need Vertex’s ERP depth.

GoodVat: An onboarding call, after which GoodVat configures the account with you. Usually days.

Vertex: Very high. It needs a certified implementation partner, taxability mapping, ERP configuration and UAT, typically over 3–9 months.

Verdict: GoodVat.

GoodVat: A per-calculation audit log with the rule, rate and jurisdiction applied, plus filed returns stored alongside their data.

Vertex: Enterprise audit trails, statutory reconciliation and a tax data warehouse for analytics and liability forecasting.

Verdict: Vertex wins for large finance teams that need tax analytics. GoodVat’s audit trail is enough for online businesses.

GoodVat: Registration, calculation, invoicing and filing in 190 countries and 14,000+ jurisdictions, plus address standardisation and geocoding APIs. E-invoicing is on the roadmap.

Vertex: Indirect tax, e-invoicing for ViDA, cross-border trade and HS classification, property tax, and 200+ Vertex Exchange partners.

Verdict: Vertex covers far more of the enterprise tax function. GoodVat covers the online-seller compliance cycle end to end.

GoodVat: Onboarding call, then human tax experts over email, chat and Slack. It’s a new product with a short public track record.

Vertex: Enterprise support tiers with named account managers, and Vertex University for training and certification.

Verdict: Vertex for enterprise structure and certification. GoodVat for quick, direct access to a person.

Beyond Sellers: White-Label Tax for Platforms

Section titled “Beyond Sellers: White-Label Tax for Platforms”

GoodVat also sells its engine as white-label infrastructure:

  • Online marketplaces: marketplace facilitator and deemed-supplier compliance, plus tax as a feature for every seller.
  • Payment processors: PSPs such as Adyen, along with acquirers and PayFacs, can offer a branded tax product with calculation, invoicing and filing.
  • Merchant of Record platforms: MoRs expanding into new countries get calculation, registration and filing infrastructure.

Vertex is built into enterprise ERP and commerce stacks as tax technology for the business running it. It isn’t sold as a white-label product for a platform to resell to its own merchants.

Choose GoodVat if:

  • You’re an online business, marketplace, PSP or MoR, not an SAP shop
  • You want full compliance for a monthly fee, not a five- or six-figure contract
  • You want to be live in days, not quarters

Choose Vertex if:

  • SAP S/4HANA, ECC or Oracle is the backbone of your business
  • You have significant purchase-side use tax exposure
  • You need multi-entity tax analytics and a tax data warehouse
  • You need e-invoicing and customs classification in the same platform

Neither if:

  • You’re outside the EU and need an IOSS intermediary. Use EAS Project, SimplyVAT or Taxually
