GoodVat vs Stripe Tax for Cross-Border Sellers 2026
Stripe Tax and GoodVat both calculate tax at checkout across the EU, UK, US and beyond. The difference is scope. Stripe Tax is a tax feature inside Stripe payments. It calculates and collects tax on Stripe transactions and leaves most of the paperwork to you. GoodVat is a full compliance service: it tracks your thresholds, registers you, calculates tax on every sale from any channel, sends invoices and files your returns.
For most sellers the choice comes down to two questions. Is Stripe your only payment processor? Do you want your returns filed for you, or are you happy to file them yourself?
1. Local VAT / Sales Tax Filing
Section titled “1. Local VAT / Sales Tax Filing”GoodVat: Files local returns. GoodVat prepares and submits your domestic VAT, GST and sales tax returns using the transaction data already in the platform. That includes UK VAT returns through MTD. You don’t export a report and re-key it into Xero or FreeAgent, because the return is filed for you each period.
Stripe Tax: Does not file UK VAT returns and isn’t MTD filing software. Stripe Tax produces jurisdiction reports that you import into Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent, and the MTD submission happens there.
Verdict: GoodVat wins. Filing is the part of compliance that takes the most time, and Stripe Tax doesn’t do it outside the US.
2. EU IOSS
Section titled “2. EU IOSS”GoodVat: Applies destination-country VAT to EU orders of €150 or less and zero-rates orders above the threshold, across every connected channel. GoodVat also prepares and files the monthly IOSS return. It is not a registered IOSS intermediary, though. EU-established sellers don’t need one. Sellers based outside the EU, including UK sellers, must appoint one by law, and GoodVat prepares the return for your intermediary to submit.
Stripe Tax: Applies IOSS rates correctly on Stripe orders once your IOSS number is in the Dashboard. It doesn’t prepare or file the monthly return. You export the data and pass it to your intermediary.
Verdict: GoodVat wins on everything after checkout: a ready-made monthly return built from all your channels. Neither tool acts as your intermediary. If you’re outside the EU you still need EAS Project, SimplyVAT, Taxually or similar.
3. EU OSS
Section titled “3. EU OSS”GoodVat: Union and Non-Union OSS are both supported. GoodVat tracks the €10,000 EU distance-selling threshold, registers you for OSS when you cross it, calculates destination-country VAT and files the quarterly OSS return.
Stripe Tax: Calculates OSS correctly on Stripe transactions and produces country-level reports. Filing the return through your member-state portal is your job.
Verdict: GoodVat wins. Both get the rate right, but only GoodVat handles registration and the quarterly return.
4. US Sales Tax
Section titled “4. US Sales Tax”GoodVat: Tracks economic nexus in every state, calculates at rooftop level and files state returns. Jurisdictions are resolved with GoodVat’s own address and geocoding data rather than ZIP-code lookups. A ZIP code can cover several cities, counties and special districts at different rates, so ZIP-based lookups are a common cause of US sales tax errors. GoodVat also knows when Amazon, Etsy or another marketplace has already collected tax as the marketplace facilitator, so you don’t double-count those sales toward filing.
Stripe Tax: Strong. Nexus tracking across all states, address-level calculation and Dashboard filing through the TaxJar-powered integration. For a Stripe-only US seller it’s a clean, complete setup.
Verdict: Close. Stripe Tax is proven and filing sits right in the Dashboard. GoodVat’s rooftop accuracy, marketplace awareness and multi-channel coverage matter more as you add sales channels beyond Stripe.
5. VAT Calculation at Checkout
Section titled “5. VAT Calculation at Checkout”GoodVat: Real-time calculation through the API or a platform integration. It sets the rate by product, customer location and B2B or B2C status, checks VAT numbers and applies reverse charge. GoodVat works at the store and API level, not the payment level, so the same engine taxes Shopify orders, PayPal payments, Adyen transactions and direct API calls.
Stripe Tax: Excellent inside Stripe: a single toggle, automatic rate updates, VAT ID validation and reverse charge. Anything that doesn’t go through Stripe, such as PayPal orders, bank transfers or another processor, gets no tax calculation.
Verdict: Stripe Tax is smoother if Stripe is your only processor. GoodVat wins as soon as you take payments any other way.
6. Platform Integrations
Section titled “6. Platform Integrations”GoodVat:
- E-commerce and marketplaces: Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Amazon FBA, Etsy
- Payment providers: Stripe, Square, Adyen, PayPal, Braintree, Amazon Pay, GoCardless, Mollie, Checkout.com, Razorpay
- Accounting: Xero, QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage, Zoho Books
- Custom stores: REST API. GoodVat is built API-first
Stripe Tax:
- Stripe Billing, Checkout, Invoicing, Payment Links: native
- Shopify / WooCommerce: only when Stripe processes the payment
- Custom stores: one line of code, with excellent developer experience
- Other processors: not covered
Verdict: GoodVat wins on breadth. Stripe Tax is the best-integrated option inside Stripe and doesn’t work anywhere else.
7. Pricing Model
Section titled “7. Pricing Model”GoodVat: Flat monthly plans starting at $20/month. You don’t pay a percentage of each transaction. Registration and filing are quoted per jurisdiction, depending on where you’re registered and how often you file.
Stripe Tax: 0.5% of each transaction where tax is calculated and you’re registered. There’s no monthly fee. Filing through the TaxJar integration costs extra.
Take a seller doing $40,000 a month through Stripe in taxable jurisdictions. Stripe Tax costs about $200 a month for calculation alone, and the fee rises with revenue. A GoodVat plan stays flat as volume grows.
Verdict: Stripe Tax is cheaper for very small or irregular volume. GoodVat’s flat pricing wins once you have steady volume, and it covers every channel, not only Stripe.
8. Setup Complexity
Section titled “8. Setup Complexity”GoodVat: Sales-led. You book a call and GoodVat’s team configures the account with you: jurisdictions, product categories, channel connections and existing registrations. It takes little of your time, but it isn’t instant. You can’t sign up and switch it on in five minutes.
Stripe Tax: Very low. Flip a toggle in the Dashboard, add your registrations, and you’re live.
Verdict: Stripe Tax is faster to get running. GoodVat asks for a call up front and does the configuration for you, which suits sellers who’d rather not work out product tax codes on their own.
9. Reporting and Records
Section titled “9. Reporting and Records”GoodVat: Every calculation is logged with the exact rule, rate and jurisdiction applied, so each figure on a return traces back to individual transactions. Because GoodVat files the returns, the submitted returns and underlying data stay together in one place for audits and the 10-year IOSS record-keeping requirement.
Stripe Tax: Per-jurisdiction reports in the Dashboard, exportable as CSV. You archive long-term records yourself.
Verdict: GoodVat wins on audit readiness. Stripe Tax’s reports are enough for a single-channel seller who files through an accountant.
10. Ecosystem / Wider Product
Section titled “10. Ecosystem / Wider Product”GoodVat: A tax-first platform. It covers registration, calculation, automatic invoicing and credit notes, and filing, in 190 countries and 14,000+ jurisdictions. GoodVat also sells address standardisation and geocoding APIs, which is where the rooftop jurisdiction accuracy comes from. E-invoicing formats (Peppol, Verifactu, NF525 and others) are on the roadmap but not live yet.
Stripe Tax: One module in the Stripe platform, alongside Payments, Billing, Invoicing, Checkout, Radar and Connect. If you build on Stripe, tax is already woven through everything.
Verdict: Stripe’s ecosystem is broader for payments. GoodVat’s is deeper for compliance. Neither offers mandatory e-invoicing today.
11. Support
Section titled “11. Support”GoodVat: Every customer gets an onboarding call, and support comes from people with tax knowledge over email, chat and Slack. GoodVat is new to the market, so there aren’t many public reviews to check yet.
Stripe Tax: Excellent self-serve documentation, plus email and chat for account issues. There’s no tax advisory: Stripe will help you use the tool, not tell you what you owe.
Verdict: GoodVat wins on human support. Stripe wins on documentation depth and years of track record.
Beyond Sellers: White-Label Tax for Platforms
Section titled “Beyond Sellers: White-Label Tax for Platforms”This is where the two products differ most. GoodVat isn’t only for businesses selling their own products. It also sells its compliance engine as a white-label API for platforms that want to offer tax to their own users:
- Online marketplaces: marketplace facilitator and deemed-supplier rules in the US, EU, UK and Australia can make the platform liable for tax on third-party sales. GoodVat calculates tax on every product sold on the platform, keeps the marketplace compliant and lets it offer threshold tracking, invoices and reports to each seller.
- Payment processors: PSPs such as Adyen, along with acquirers and PayFacs, can put tax calculation, invoicing and filing into their own checkout and merchant dashboard under their own brand, with their own pricing.
- Merchant of Record platforms: MoRs take on tax liability in every country they sell into. GoodVat gives them the calculation, registration and filing infrastructure to launch in new countries without building a tax team in each one.
Stripe Tax works for platforms built on Stripe Connect, but it’s Stripe-branded and only covers payments Stripe processes. A PSP that competes with Stripe can’t resell it. That is the gap GoodVat’s white-label product fills.
12. Best For: The Honest Verdict
Section titled “12. Best For: The Honest Verdict”Choose GoodVat if:
- You take payments through more than one processor or channel (Shopify plus PayPal, WooCommerce plus Adyen, Amazon plus your own store)
- You want returns filed for you: UK MTD, OSS, IOSS, US sales tax and GST
- You want flat monthly pricing instead of 0.5% of every taxable sale
- You sell in US jurisdictions where ZIP-code accuracy isn’t good enough
- You’re a marketplace, PSP or MoR that wants to offer tax compliance under your own brand
Choose Stripe Tax if:
- Every payment you take goes through Stripe
- You want tax switched on today, without a call
- Your volume is small or irregular, so 0.5% works out cheaper than a flat plan
- You’re comfortable filing through your accountant or accounting software
Neither if:
- You’re outside the EU and need an IOSS intermediary. Use EAS Project, SimplyVAT or Taxually for that role
- You need mandatory e-invoicing today. Look at Quaderno, Avalara or Vertex
