VAT Number Checker tool

When you use our VAT Number Checker tool, we send the VAT number you enter to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) or the EU VIES system to validate it. We do not store the VAT numbers you check or the results returned. Each lookup is processed in real time and discarded after the response is delivered to your browser.

We may temporarily cache validation results for up to 24 hours to reduce load on government services. Cached data contains only the VAT number, validity status, and registered business name and address as returned by the relevant tax authority. No personal data about you is included in the cache.

Website analytics

We count page views and clicks on our buttons with Umami and Cloudflare Web Analytics. Neither uses cookies, tracks individual users, or collects personal data. They give us aggregate figures only — page views, referrers, countries, and device types.

With your consent, we also use Google Analytics to understand which guides and tools are useful. Google Analytics sets cookies (see below) and receives your IP address, browser details, and the pages you visit.

With your consent, we use Google Ads conversion tracking to learn which of our ads lead to enquiries. If you arrive from one of our Google ads and later send us a contact request, Google is told that the ad led to an enquiry. We do not use personalised advertising or retargeting.

Cookies

If you are in the EU, EEA, UK, or Switzerland, we ask before setting any analytics or advertising cookies, and nothing is set unless you accept. Elsewhere, these cookies are on by default and you can switch them off. Either way, you can change your choice at any time from "Cookie settings" in the site footer.

• cc_cookie — remembers your cookie choice (strictly necessary, 6 months)
• _ga, _ga_* — Google Analytics, only with consent (up to 2 years)
• _gcl_* — Google Ads conversion measurement, only with consent (90 days)

Guides and wiki content

Reading our guides requires no account, no login, and no personal information. We do not track which guides you read beyond the aggregate analytics described above.

Country detection

We use Cloudflare's IP geolocation to detect your approximate country. This is used only to pre-fill the country selector on our homepage and to decide whether to ask for cookie consent before analytics run. We do not store your IP address or location data.
