How it works

How to calculate GST and HST

To add GST/HST, multiply the price before tax by 1 plus the rate: × 1.13 for Ontario’s 13% HST. To remove it from a total that already includes tax, divide by the same number. The difference is the tax.

The rate is set by where your customer is, not where your business is. Every province charges the 5% federal GST. New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Prince Edward Island fold it into a single HST. British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and Saskatchewan charge their own PST, RST or QST beside it, on the price before GST. Alberta, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon charge GST alone.

The calculator above starts as an Ontario business selling to a customer in Quebec. Change either province, what you sell or the currency, and it applies the right taxes and splits each one out.

Add HSTPrice before tax × (1 + rate)

$100.00× 1.13$113.00

HST = $100 × 13% = $13.00

Remove HST (reverse)Total ÷ (1 + rate)

$113.00÷ 1.13$100.00

HST = $113.00 − $100.00 = $13.00

GST + QST in QuebecEach tax × the price before tax

$100.00+ $5.00 + $9.98$114.98

QST is never charged on the GST

Ontario

Ontario HST calculator: 13%

Ontario charges 13% HST: 5% federal and 8% provincial, collected as one tax and filed with the Canada Revenue Agency. Multiply by 1.13 to add it, and divide by 1.13 to take it out.

Some things get a point-of-sale rebate of the provincial part, so only 5% applies: children’s clothing and footwear, car seats, diapers and printed books among them. Basic groceries are zero-rated. Pick what you sell in the calculator and it applies the rebate.

Quebec

Quebec sales tax calculator: GST + QST

Quebec charges 5% GST and 9.975% QST, 14.975% in total. Both are worked out on the price before tax and shown as separate lines on the receipt. QST hasn’t been charged on top of the GST since 2013.

On a $100 sale that’s $5.00 of GST and $9.98 of QST, $114.98 in all. To find the price before tax in a Quebec total, divide by 1.14975: $114.98 ÷ 1.14975 = $100.00.

Revenu Québec runs both taxes for Quebec businesses. Selling into Quebec from another province, you charge QST once you’re registered for it. See the Quebec QST guide.

In the West, the provincial tax stays separate. British Columbia and Saskatchewan charge PST, Manitoba’s PST is officially the retail sales tax (RST), and Alberta has no provincial sales tax at all. Each is a percentage of the price before GST. Here’s a $100 sale in each.

Reverse calculation

How to calculate HST backwards (reverse HST and GST)

To find the tax inside a total, divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate. That’s the price before tax, and what’s left is the tax. Don’t multiply the total by the rate: 13% of $113.00 is $14.69, not the $13.00 of HST it contains. Choose Remove GST/HST in the calculator to do it for any province and product.

Sales tax on groceries, children’s clothing, books and SaaS

The standard rate is only the start. Basic groceries are zero-rated everywhere, several HST provinces rebate their provincial part on items such as children’s clothing and printed books, and the PST provinces exempt some of the same items. Highlighted rates differ from the province’s standard rate.

For Canadian businesses

Which rate does your business charge?

Four rules cover nearly every online sale. The calculator applies all of them; here they are in plain words.

  1. Charge your customer’s province’s rate

GST/HST follows the delivery address. An Ontario store charges 13% HST in Toronto, 5% GST in Calgary and 14% HST in Halifax, all from the same registration.

  2. Register at $30,000

Until your taxable sales pass $30,000 in a calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters, you’re a small supplier and don’t have to charge GST/HST. The small supplier threshold explains the test.

  3. PST and QST need their own registration

British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec each run their own tax and decide when out-of-province sellers must register. Charge it only once you’re registered there.

  4. Exports are zero-rated

Orders shipped outside Canada carry 0% GST/HST. Selling to the US? See US sales tax for Canadian sellers.

Based outside Canada? You register for GST/HST, usually under the simplified regime, once your sales to Canadian consumers pass $30,000 over 12 months. Pick your country in the calculator’s Your business is in field to see what you’d charge.

Canadian sales tax compliance

The rate is the easy part.

Knowing when you pass $30,000, which provinces you need a PST or QST number for, what to charge US customers and filing every return on time is where sellers get caught out. GoodVat and our Canadian accountants handle all of it, from your first province to all thirteen.

FAQ

GST/HST calculator FAQ

How do I calculate GST?

Multiply the price before tax by 5%. A $100 sale carries $5.00 of GST, so your customer pays $105.00. GST on its own applies in Alberta, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon. British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and Saskatchewan add a provincial tax on top, and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Prince Edward Island charge HST, which includes the GST.

How do I calculate HST in Ontario?

Multiply the price before tax by 1.13. Ontario’s HST is 13%: 5% federal and 8% provincial, charged as one tax. A $100 sale carries $13.00 of HST, for a total of $113.00. Children’s clothing, printed books and a few other items get a point-of-sale rebate of the provincial part, so only 5% applies.

How do I calculate HST backwards from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate, then subtract. In Ontario, divide by 1.13: $113.00 ÷ 1.13 = $100.00 before tax, so the HST is $13.00. Divide by 1.14 in Nova Scotia and by 1.15 in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. Don’t take 13% of the total: that overstates the tax.

How do I calculate Quebec sales tax?

Quebec charges 5% GST and 9.975% QST, both on the price before tax, 14.975% in total. A $100 sale carries $5.00 of GST and $9.98 of QST, so your customer pays $114.98. To work backwards, divide the total by 1.14975.

Is PST charged on top of GST?

No. PST in British Columbia (7%) and Saskatchewan (6%), RST in Manitoba (7%) and QST in Quebec (9.975%) are all calculated on the price before GST, never on the GST. In British Columbia a $100 sale carries $5.00 of GST and $7.00 of PST.

Which province’s rate do I charge?

Your customer’s. GST/HST follows where the goods are delivered or the service is used, not where your business is. An Ontario store charges 13% HST to a customer in Toronto, 5% GST to one in Calgary and 14% HST to one in Halifax. PST and QST are different: you only charge them once you’re registered with that province.

What is the difference between GST, HST and PST?

GST is the 5% federal sales tax charged across Canada. HST is the GST and a provincial tax combined into one, in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Prince Edward Island. PST is a separate provincial sales tax, charged alongside GST in British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Manitoba calls its version RST and Quebec calls its version QST.

Do I have to charge GST/HST?

Only once you’re registered. Registration is required when your taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters. Under that you’re a small supplier and can choose whether to register. Many sellers register early to claim back the GST/HST they pay on business costs.

What is the HST rate in Nova Scotia?

14%. Nova Scotia cut its HST from 15% to 14% on 1 April 2025. If your store still charges 15% on orders shipped to Nova Scotia, update it. New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island remain at 15%.

Do I charge GST/HST to customers outside Canada?

Usually not. Goods you export, such as an order shipped to a customer in the United States, are zero-rated: you charge 0% GST/HST but still report the sale on your return. Your customer may owe their own country’s sales tax or import duty instead.

Is this GST/HST calculator free?

Yes, with no signup. It uses GoodVat’s tax engine, the same one that calculates tax for online stores at checkout. It’s a calculation tool, not tax advice, so check anything unusual with the Canada Revenue Agency or an accountant.
