How it works
How to add or remove VAT
VAT is a percentage of the price before tax. To add VAT, multiply that price by 1 plus the rate: at the UK’s 20%, that’s × 1.2. To remove VAT from a price that already includes it (a reverse VAT calculation), divide by 1 plus the rate. Don’t just take the percentage off: 20% of £120 is £24, but the VAT in £120 is only £20.
The harder part is the rate. It depends on where your customer is, what you sell and who is buying. A printed book is 0% in the UK and 5.5% in France. SaaS sold to a French consumer is 20%, but sold to a French business with a valid VAT number it’s reverse-charged, so you charge nothing at all.
The calculator above handles all three. Pick the country and the product, and it applies the rate, checks the customer’s VAT number live, and converts the VAT into the currency you file in.
£100.00× 1.20£120.00
VAT = £100 × 20% = £20.00
£120.00÷ 1.20£100.00
VAT = £120 − £100 = £20.00
£120.00× 0.2 ÷ 1.2£20.00
At 20%, that’s one sixth of the price
UK VAT
UK VAT calculator: 20%, 5% and 0%
For UK sales, choose United Kingdom as the customer’s country. The standard rate is 20%. A reduced rate of 5% applies to things like home energy and children’s car seats, and 0% to most food, books and children’s clothes. Pick what you sell and the calculator applies the right one.
To remove UK VAT from a price, divide by 1.2. The VAT inside any price at 20% is one sixth of it. The table has the sums people look up most.

VAT rates by country and product
The standard rate is only the start. Most countries charge less on essentials, and the same product can be zero-rated in one country and fully taxed in the next. These are the rates for a few product categories that catch sellers out. The calculator covers many more. Each country links to its guide.

FAQ
VAT calculator FAQ
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the price before VAT by 1 plus the VAT rate. At the UK’s 20% standard rate, multiply by 1.2: £100 becomes £120, of which £20 is VAT. The rate depends on where your customer is and what you sell, so books, food and children’s clothes are often charged less, or nothing.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the price including VAT by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, divide by 1.2: £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 before VAT, and the VAT is £20. A common mistake is to take 20% off £120, which gives £96 and gets the VAT wrong by £4.
What is a reverse VAT calculation?
Working backwards from a price that already includes VAT to find the price before VAT and the VAT inside it. At 20%, the VAT is one sixth of the gross price: £60 including VAT is £50 plus £10 VAT. Choose Price includes VAT in the calculator and it does the reverse VAT sum at any rate.
Which country’s VAT rate do I charge?
Usually your customer’s. Online sales to consumers in another EU country are taxed at the customer’s rate once your EU-wide cross-border sales pass €10,000 a year, and from the first sale if you’re based outside the EU. UK sales are charged UK VAT. Pick the customer’s country in the calculator and it applies the right rate.
Do I charge VAT to business customers?
Often not, for cross-border sales. When you sell to a VAT-registered business in another EU country, the reverse charge usually applies: you invoice without VAT and your customer accounts for it. Choose Business in the calculator and add their VAT number. It’s checked live with VIES for EU numbers, and UK numbers are checked for format.
Why does the rate change with the product?
Every country has a standard rate and one or more reduced rates for things like food, books, medicines and children’s goods. The UK zero-rates printed books and e-books, while France charges 5.5% on both. The calculator applies the rate for the category you pick.
What is the VAT rate in the UK?
The standard rate is 20%. A reduced rate of 5% applies to things like home energy and children’s car seats, and a 0% rate to most food, books and children’s clothes. Businesses must register and start charging it once their taxable turnover passes £90,000 a year.
Is this VAT calculator free?
